Raising Flora Podcast
Welcome to the Raising Flora Podcast where we talk about periods, parenting, and everything you need to give your tweens and teens a healthy, positive start to their cycling years. I'm your host, Liz Vivian, a mom and a menstrual health educator and coach. I love teaching about menstrual cycles — from biology and hormones to inner seasons and cyclical self care. I love inviting stories, answering questions, and making periods a little less taboo every day. I’m warm, down to earth and here to help — you can ask me anything.
Season One is all about the back-to-school season. As a mom, I know this season can be a lot to manage both logistically and emotionally as we nurture our tweens and teens through so many beginnings – new classes, new sports seasons, new bus routes, new friendships. So I reached out to experts for good ideas and support. We’ve had amazing conversations about important topics like mental health, nutrition, mindset, friendship, academics, and love. And I’ve brought a cycle aware spin to each chat. I invite you to listen in.

Strengthening Your Athlete's Mental Game with Bre Smedley
Today, I talk about supporting our tween’s and teen’s mental game with Bre Smedley, a life-long athlete who played volleyball in college and now coaches a two-time state champion high school volleyball team in addition to running her business, The Elite Competitor. Bre is using her personal experiences as an athlete plus her Master’s in Education, and her Certification in Positive Performance Mindset to help girls build their confidence for game day and every day.
As a mom of a competitive athlete I gobbled up Bre's insights and suggestions and I'm excited to share our conversation with you. We talk about:
- why confidence and mental strength matters as much as physical training for middle and high school athletes
- what it looks like when your athlete has a solid mental game – hint, it’s not seeing her happy all the time
- what to say to your daughter before and after competition
- and what your athlete can do to show up as a positive force on her team
I’m teaching Getting Ready for Periods classes for moms that start in October.
